Picking up where Switchback left off, the Chicago PBI team is suspended pending an investigation after Hector succeeded in breaking the captive shades out of custody and Lindy is suspected of having been involved. Backed into a corner, Lindy and Alex, along with the remainder of their team, decide to go off the grid and take Hector down once and for all - with some unexpected assistance to aid them.

I have enjoyed this series as a whole and I thought this was a decent conclusion, albeit a little abrupt. This third instalment tells the continuing story of the Bureau of Preternatural Investigation and its search for the rogue vampire king, Hector as he bids to change the balance of power between humans and shades. Outbreak overlaps with the end of the previous Nightshades book Switchback, and revisits the same events from a different point of view. I would give it four stars, but I find these books more novellas than novels. It would be nice if there was more depth to them.
Things were in a bit of a jam at the end of book two so I was ready to pounce when this final book in the series came available. Vampires, FBI, betrayals, and an enemy who seems to be holding all the cards was definitely just my thing.
Outbreak is book three in an Urban Fantasy trilogy so it does not work standalone or out of order.
