In So Close to Being the Sh*t, Yall Dont Even Know, Parks and Recreation star Retta takes us on her not-so-meteoric rise from roaches to riches (well, rich enough that she can buy $15,000 designer handbags yet scared enough to know shes always a heartbeat away from ramen with American cheese).Throwing her hard-working Liberian parents for a loop, Retta abandons her plan to attend med school after graduating Duke University to move to Hollywood to star in her own sitcomlike her comedy heroes Lucille Ball and Roseanne.Say what? Word. Turns out Retta might actually be on to something. After winning Comedy Centrals stand-up competition, she should be ready for prime timebut a fear of success derails her biggest dream.Whether reminiscing about her days as a contract chemist at GlaxoSmithKline, telling dirty jokes to Mormons, feeling like the odd man out on Parks, fending off racist trolls on Twitter, flirting with Michael Fassbender, or expertly stalking the cast of "Hamilton," Rettas unique voice and refreshing honesty will make you laugh, cry, and laugh so hard youll cry.Her eponymous sitcom might not have happened yet, but by the end of So Close to Being the Sh*t, youll be rooting for Retta to be the next one-named wonder to take over your television. And she just might inspire you to reach for the stars, too....

I looooved this book! I read the first half as a digital copy and the second half as an audiobook once it was released. I was entertained the whole time! This was a fairly light read with a few hints of depth, but not too much that it was too heavy to listen to. It was a great road-trip read. I was actually laughing out loud a lot of the time! I highly recommend listening to the audiobook if you can, because Retta is a great narrator. I loved learning about her time on Park ...more
Guys, I think Retta & I are BFFs now! This memoir has a very conversational tone, like you're just sitting around the coffee table of her living room with friends & a bottle of wine while Retta tells you about herself & her experiences. She's famous enough to have interesting stories about the biz but also still manages to geek out over Hamilton, Hollywood perks when she gets them, and handbags. (They always fit, y'all!) This was a real treat!

In short: this was EXACTLY what I needed to read right now. Super entertaining and very funny. I was definitely THAT GUY on the subway who was giggling and smiling big (and then looking around like a crazy person to see if people were staring at me like a crazy person). And I never imagined that if i met Retta I'd yell "Treat Yo Self" or ask her to say it to me...but I would DEFINITELY NOT do that now after reading this. :)
One of the best books I have read this year! I laughed out loud numerous times, I said to myself "girl, I feel ya" numerous times, and I didnt want to put it down. As a huge Parks and Rec fan (general cast type love going on), I was excited to get the opportunity to read this, when I finished I am a HUGE Retta fan for life! Everyone that enjoys a good laugh, the chance for inspiration, or just a book to make you say "thank you. I have felt that way for years!" should rush out and pick up this fa ...more
I will always support every fat celebrity out there as long as they're not problematic in any way, so I had to pick up this book, not to mention that I love Donna Meagle and I wanted to see how much of Retta's values align with her character's. It turns out that the writers who created Donna were more focused on sharing feminist ideals than Retta was in this particular book (though she is a feminist). I don't feel like I learned anything new. Retta talks about addictions such as coffee and sh ...more
If you wanted more Retta in your life, this book is for you. I was pleasantly surprised by stories of her immigrant childhood (money is tight? relatives coming to live with you? are you me?), and found her more relatable than I ever thought she would be. I may not agree with her choice of hockey team or even have a fraction of her intensity for Hamilton, but this? This book is a master class in picking your battles in order to live your best life.
I was VERY excited when I won a Goodreads giveaway for this book. Thanks, Goodreads! I have been a Retta fan since Parks and Rec. This is one of the more enjoyable celeb memoirs that I have read recently. It was funny and honest, and now I kind of wish we could be friends. I think I watch too many of her Instagram stories because I kept imagining her voice in my head as I was reading. (I am sure the audiobook version will be extra awesome.) If you like Retta, this will not disappoint.

If you know me, you know that I am a huge Parks and Recreation fan. I had no idea Retta was coming out with an autobiography. I had to request it right away from Netgalley. I am so happy that I ended up getting approved for this. It was such a fun read.
I don't know a lot about Retta besides that she was a character on Parks and Recreation but I ended up learning so much about her from this book. I loved how open she was about everything. I feel like sometimes in celebrity autobiographies people ...more
