3.5 Not quite what I expected. A solid suspense thriller
I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC copy of this book by the author (one of my favourites). Whilst I enjoy all her various series so far, I really enjoy the stand-alone YA books she writes. This one is no exception - it takes a dark and confronting subject (the aftermath of a school shooting) and makes it accessible to everyone.
The two main characters have both lost loved ones in a school shooting, and the story occurs 3 years after that tragedy. It's funny, and heartbreaking and just a great ...more
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. I was in no way compensated for this review.
Kelley Armstrong has pretty much proven that there is no book that she can’t write and it turning out to be totally amazing! Aftermath is the third YA thriller she’s written and it was just as chilling and eerie as I had hoped it to be! That it deals with a school shooting and in our current time was a little bold, but then I am reminded that books are written a goo ...more
Powerful, timely, and full of twists.
Omg this book.
So many emotions went through me from start to finish. I completely understand how this subject matter could be hard for some to read; however, the book truly *is* about the lives of two teenagers after the incident. It's about hope, love, tragedy, and reconnecting with friends and family. It's devastatingly honest and true to our current society and its issues.
Kelley is one of the most amazing authors I have had the pleasure of reading, and I feel she handled this delicate subje ...more
I didn't realize this was YA when I went into it and boy did it immediately show. For a book with the deep subject matter that this book is about, it only shows the adults (parents, teachers, cops) as stupid and making the type of mistakes people would lose their jobs over.
For me there was more wrong with this book than there was right. In light of another recent school shooting, the flaws are even more obvious.
WARNINGS: (view spoiler)[Death by police, mass shooting/murder, school shooting/murder, suicide, sibling death, bullying. (hide spoiler)]
A few months ago, I caught up on some of the author's books that I'd missed. I was in a terrible mood and/or the books were very disappointing. The author's last (before AFTERMATH) YA novel included - MISSING. May have rated it 2 stars (3 at the highest).
Thankfully, the author must be over her bad patch, or I wasn't in as much of a bad way when I read this, AFT ...more
This was a really engaging read! I liked that it was a thriller. Full review soon!
