Less sex than usual for Carey, but the same driving message as always. Love is love is love.
A world where gods walk, many parts of a prophecy exist--and just as many ways of living exist as there are gods.
Khai belongs to a harsh desert god, and the brotherhood that raised him has withheld a lot of secrets until he is older. But his god-appointed task is to protect a princess who lives in a palace full of intrigue and assassination, so these secrets must be uncovered.

So good! I can't speak to the trans representation, but the story and characters were mesmerizing. :)
I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways and have chosen to give my honest opinion about it.
I think this book was honestly phenomenal! In recent books, the concept of "vulnerable" or "human" gods has come up a lot, which may feel cliched to some, but the way the other handled it, it felt more comfortable if anything! That being said, I think the characters and settings were very unique, and very interesting! I could barely put this book down, I truly loved it!

My English review
This is a novel that I was looking forward to. Why is that? Jacqueline Carey! It is not possible to miss one of this author’s novels and I was very curious to discover her new story.

Review to come.
Only did one read through so far. Probably better ways to see/describe it, but to me it seemed Jaqueline Carey's take on "Pirates of Dark Water" with her beautiful prose and lush worldbuilding.
I really hope it does well, her fantasy is amazing, but after Banewreaker/Godslayer didn't do well she wrote several urban fantasy type books which were fine, and people probably loved them, but seemed to me to be a waste of her talents. She evokes a sense of epic/mythic wonder so well.

The structure of this story is so awesome! It's like three books in one. The first third consists of assassins training in the desert, second is city life and court intrigue, and third is a good old fashioned epic heroic quest.
Hoping this is a trilogy. Want more of these characters and the adventure to continue. Thank you, ms Carey. Fantastic
