The City on the Other Side Reviews
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.
The City on the Other Side is a cute story about a young girl, Isabel, living in San Francisco after the earthquake in 1906. She is on a quest to help restore balance to the world of the Fey by delivering a magical necklace to a person in the Seelie court. This novel has a cast of endearing and interesting characters. You don't see much of San Francisco, but you do get to see ...more
I really liked this graphic novel! The art is amazing, and I love all the diversity in both the Fae and the humans. Set in San Francisco (and it's Fairy equivalent on the other side of the Veil) just after the Earthquake and subsequent fire of 1906, it tells a tale of a neglected girl who wants to have adventures and gets more than she bargained for! The story wrapped up so perfectly - it made me very happy!! (Check out the last few pages for more information on the basis for the story, super cu ...more
Isabel isn't having the greatest time at either of her homes -- her mother doesn't seem interested in her and her father appears to be more comfortable working with his sculptures than interacting with her. When Isabel stumbles upon a dying fairy who bequeaths her a necklace and a mission, she doesn't hesitate to enter the world of fairies, where a battle between the Seelie and Unseelie is raging. The Unseelie wish to destroy the human world, while the Seelie understand that the human world prov ...more
More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/The City On The Other Side is a fairly standard urban fantasy, albeit one with an historical milieu. I had been hoping to find something more original - a spark or reason for the story other than a rather tenuous tie to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. The historical aspects are nearly non existent (though there are some middle-grade aimed factoids at the end) and I really wanted to see 1906 San Francisco rather than t ...more
Isabel is a poor little rich girl in San Francisco just after the big earthquake in the early 1900s. She has everything she could want, except her parents’ positive attention and love. She stumbles across the Veil one day into the fairy world and finds herself in the middle of a fairy war between the Seelies and the Unseelies. Isabel suddenly finds herself tasked with taking an important necklace to someone in the city named Miyori for the Seelie forces. The Unseelies are fast on her trail, and ...more
The City on the Other Side is a sort of historical fiction, mostly fantasy comic about Isabel, a young girl living in San Francisco in the early 1900s. Isabel's mother is a sort of absent parent who is more interested in high society and appearances than her daughter's interests or happiness, and Isabel feels very trapped in her home, despite loving and dreaming of spending more time in the city. When she's sent to her sculptor father's home in the country to spend the summer she feels that he t ...more
Mairghread Scott's The City on the Other Side is a fantasy graphic novel set in 1906 San Francisco after the earthquake that destroyed over 80% of the city. After visiting her father for the summer and stumbling upon a dying fairy in the woods, young Isabel finds herself at the center of a war between two sparring fairy groups. The Seelie and the Unseelie are fairies that reside on the other side of the veil in their own world, but both the human and fairy world can feel the effects of what goes ...more
Mairghread Scott and Robin Robinson create a charming children's fantasy, set in Northern California in the early years of the 20th century, and in a magical otherworld inhabited by fairies. Isabel, a young San Francisco girl whose parents have separated, anxiously goes to stay with her artist father in Carmel, only to discover a world parallel to hers. The Seelie and Unseelie, clans of fairies, inhabit this world, and Isabel finds herself caught up in a war between the two. She encounters Benji ...more
