The City on the Other Side Reviews
I was provided a free digital copy of this book by Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
Isabel is a young girl with estranged parents living in San Francisco. When she goes to visit her father for the summer, she unexpectedly crosses the veil into the land of faeries. This land's peoples, the Seelie and Unseelie, are currently at war, causing terrible geological events in the human world. Given an amulet in trust, Isabel must travel through the land searching for the missing leader of th ...more
This was a fun amalgam of a historical setting and a fantasy world. Scott's story is filled with high stakes and developed characters--particularly on the other side with Isabel's sidekicks like Buttons. The story in the "real" world is decidedly less developed. Most bothersome to me was Isabel's relationship with her mother. Basically every other female character in this comic is capable and vocal. Yet we barely see Isabel's mother. There is no explanation for her behavior with Isabel or her ge ...more
The City on the Other Side is a cutesy story of a young girl in post 1906-Earthquake San Francisco. Her distant mother ships her off to spend the summer with her artist father who seems to be too busy to pay much attention to her.
Lonely, she takes to wandering and accidentally finds herself in the middle of a fairy war. When she is handed a magical necklace by a dying Seelie fae, she finds herself in the fairy realm on a mission to help find the Seelie Queen in hopes of defeating the Unseelie l ...more
The strongest part of The City on the Other Side is the artwork. It is a really lovely book. Unfortunately the story is just okay. It is a pretty standard middle grades portal fantasy with a young protagonist living a sheltered life who is often overlooked and neglected by the adults around her. She discovers the barrier between our world and the world of fairies and unsurprisingly finds adventure there. It is enjoyable but predictable. I think young readers just starting out with fantasy would ...more
Huge thank you to First Second for this ARC!
City on the Other Side was a graphic novel I knew nothing about that happened to show up on my door step. It tells the story of a girl named Isabel who is very sheltered, but after a large scale earthquake, decides she may in fact be ready for adventure.
Isabel is a character I think many readers will easily be able to relate to. She's shy and nervous, but she grows through the course of the story. Stepping through an invisible barrier, Isabel is transp ...more
Like many other reviewers, I felt as though this gorgeously illustrated graphic novel fell very flat when it came to the plot. It tried to squeeze this expansive world and history into a very small package and I had a hard time connecting to the emotional weight that the story was trying to show. I was also perplexed by the main character's relationship to her parents. We're introduced to the cold mother and then the artistic, free spirited father and then her relationship is only repaired with ...more

The City on the Other Side by Mairghread Scott is a graphic novel that tells the story of a war between the fae -- the Seelie and the Unseelie -- and the human girl pulled into their world. It's an interesting premise, but I just couldn't get into it. It was all very pedestrian. There weren't any surprises. I could guess where the story was going. ...more
